It might be the biggest gaffe of Barack Obama’s race to the White House, and it may cost him the privilege of living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Riding her white horse, wearing her orange silks, Hillary Clinton charged onto the stage Tuesday night coming to the young swain Obama’s rescue. She gave the speech of her life, prevailing on her 18 million voters -- 50% of those disgruntled who say that they cannot and despite her passion and argument will not vote for Barack Obama -- to do just that. The effect of the speech was to remind her supporters, and maybe show the world that Hillary Clinton would have been the party’s better choice. The Chairperson of The Sisterhood of the Pantsuits was every bit presidential in her demeanor, showed herself to be a leader you can believe in, and a woman seasoned enough to appear dignified and wise in the face of defeat. Thursday night Barack Obama will give a great acceptance speech; he always does, or at least the pundits tell us he does. The party at the Mile High Stadium will be grander, more ostentatious than anything any of us have ever seen. It will be pomp and circumstance. It will be Bon Jovi and Springsteen. Rumors abound that the set looks like a Roman Coliseum. Zeus runs for president. In its newness it will be a change, it will be extraordinary, but it will never measure up to what The Lady in Waiting displayed Tuesday night in the Pepsi Center, where she showed all the pundits who have unreasonably despised her over the years unfairly branding her hateful by confusing her politics with her personal dedication to the causes that she believes in. Now because of Barack Obama’s Zeus-sized ego and stubborn refusal to overcome the bad feelings of a deeply contentious primary, and in fear of the looming presence of Bill Clinton -- both reasons about Obama’s ego and having nothing to do what’s best for the country -- should Barack Obama make it to the Oval Office he will not be occupying the office alone. No, he will be living with the ghostly presence of former President Clinton hovering above him, and competing with the shadow presidency of Hillary Clinton. Because while Hillary Clinton’s goal last night was first to at least appear to rescue Barack Obama, she very much rescued her own candidacy. Barack Obama may secure the physical votes and become the Democratic Party’s nominee, but in the hearts of many it will be Hillary Clinton who will be their leader. Obama may be in charge of the West Wing, but it looks to me that the Clintons are about to erect a new wing of the Democratic Party somewhere in the shadows of Pennsylvania Avenue.

Under the misguided direction of Barack Obama the Democrats have spent two of the four nights of their convention trying to unite the party when one gesture by Barack Obama, that the naming of Hillary Clinton as his vice president the week before the convention, would have settled the argument and left precious airtime to establish Barack Obama’s credentials.
